The building work at the front of the Baker Building is the initial stage of the construction of The James Dyson Building, which will provide additional office space, seminar and meeting rooms for the Department.  Floorplans are available from this link, and further pictures are available at the link below.

After a busy few weeks preparing and levelling the site, piling is due to start on 30th October and last for approximately 3 weeks. This is one week ahead of schedule.

There will be 138 piles which will be drilled into the ground rather than driven (to reduce noise and vibration). The design team and contractor have been working with the department’s CSIC group to install fibre optic sensors into the piles, providing future opportunity to monitor their behaviour and feed the information gathered back into Engineering’s courses and research.

As a general outline programme, during and following piling the ground beams will be formed, followed by the ground floor slab which we hope to be finished before the new year. Construction of the concrete frame will take the project through until approximately Easter.

Completion is due in November '15.
