We're delighted to announce that the Engineering Department will be carrying out a major refurbishment of its facilities for students in the summer of 2015.  A £2M donation from the James Dyson Foundation, a £2.65M investment from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and £0.6M from the University of Cambridge will allow us to transform the workshop and library facilities in the Department.

• The Dyson Centre for Engineering Design will be formed from refurbishment of the existing upstairs workshop, and its extension to link directly to the DPO by the demolition of the existing offices in this area.  The new space will provide a modern workspace where engineering students and student-led projects will have access to facilities for prototyping and making, using both traditional hand- and machine-tools and also modern computer-controlled machinery and 3D printers.
• A new bridge will be built to link the Dyson Centre in the Inglis Building directly to the library in the centre wing of the Baker Building.
• The library will be refurbished, removing archive storage to allow for the provision of a variety of workspaces for students, from traditional quiet working space to spaces for groups to work together.
• Lecture Room 6 will be refurbished to form a modern teaching space.

Together with the DPO, this refurbishment will allow us to provide continuous student-focused space around the courtyard at first floor level.

Below are an early architects sketch of the interior of the Dyson Centre, and the proposed view from the courtyard.  Also attached is an architects plan of the refurbishment.

The work will start in April 2015.  Inevitably, this will cause some disruption, for which we apologise in advance.
